When the sun comes out, so do our jewellery favourites. Lighter fabrics, open necklines, rolled sleeves—this is the season when your pieces really shine. But warmer weather also raises a few quiet questions:

  • Can sunscreen damage my necklace?

  • Is sweat bad for my bangles?

  • Should I be storing things differently when I travel?

Let’s break it down.

1. Does heat affect jewellery?

Not dramatically, but yes—it can. Direct sunlight, for instance, can cause some stones to fade over time (especially softer ones like topaz or pearls). It can also heat up metal quickly if left out—something to keep in mind when you’re styling outdoors or leaving pieces in a sunlit room.

What to do: Store your jewellery out of direct sunlight. When in doubt, the pouch or box it came in is still your best friend.

2. Sweat and skincare products: do they matter?

Yes. Sweat is salty and can slowly affect finishes on metals like sterling silver or vermeil. Sunscreen, moisturisers, and perfumes can leave a film on your jewellery, dulling its shine.

The fix:

  • Let your skincare settle before you put on your pieces.

  • Wipe things down with a soft cloth at the end of the day—especially items you wear often.

It’s small care, but it adds up.

3. Should I wear jewellery to the beach or pool?

You can, but we wouldn’t recommend it.

Saltwater and chlorine are both known for affecting metal over time. Even vermeil or gold-filled pieces can eventually wear down. And let’s not even talk about the chance of losing your ring in the sand.

Better option: Save those pieces for dry land. Or, if you want that beachy look, style them after the sea dip—think cover-ups and post-swim glam.

4. Is it okay to travel with my favourite jewellery?

Absolutely. But you’ll want to store it well. Pieces can scratch each other in a tangle of earrings and necklaces.

Tip: Use soft cloth pouches or a small jewellery organiser. It keeps everything clean, separate, and easy to grab.

5. Do I need to clean jewellery more often in the summer?

If you wear it more, or sweat more—yes.

Think of it like your sunglasses or white trainers: they look better when they’re cared for. A quick wipe or gentle clean (for fine jewellery, use lukewarm water and mild soap) every couple of weeks goes a long way.

Your jewellery should last—and it will, if you give it the little care it needs. Spring and summer are made for bringing your DOLA pieces out to shine. Knowing how to care for them means they’ll keep shining season after season.
